Hi Zachary, it’s good to hear from you again. You were MIA for a few weeks.

My mother tongue is Saraiki, which we spoke at home. My neighbourhood spoke Punjabi, which I learnt as a kid. Urdu was the country’s official language, so learnt it at school, and from the neighbourhood. Hindi is similar to that, so it doesn’t count as a separate language, I guess. English, everybody learns at school, college, movies, and from internet etc.

Due to religion, learnt to read, and understand Arabic at a very early age. And, then lived in Dubai for some time, plus I love Arabic culture and language.

So, writing poetry in Saraiki, Punjabi, Urdu, and English is not difficult at all. Arabic, I’ve to put some effort, as my vocabulary is limited. But with the help from Google translate, and a few good friends, it happens too.

I love Spanish and Italian languages, and can converse basic sentences. Just using that and help from dictionary / translate tool, helps me write in those two — though it will be very basic.

Knowing languages is one thing, but combined with “having sensitivity and emotions” makes it easier to write poetry in multiple languages.

You should give it a try, too.
